LADY OF THE LAGOON

By the shores of that lagoon,
Where the water-lily lies,
Where the tall valerians rise
Slender as the crescent moon,
Goes Hëa Nan…Ah, Hëa Nan,
      Sleep brings me no relief:
My heart is full of grief.

By the shores of that lagoon,
Where the drowsy lotus lies,
Where the tall valerians rise
Brighter than the orbèd moon,
Shines Hëa Nan…Ah, Hëa Nan,
I turn and turn all night,
      And dawn brings no respite.
