CHAPTER 45.

Literally the second quotation reads:

"Greatest straightness is like a curve,
Greatest skill is like awkwardness,
Greatest eloquence is like stammering."

The first line reminds us of modern geometry where the straight line may be regarded as a curve of an infinitely small curvature. Cf. note on Chapter 41.
