1 ἴδετε ποταπὴν ἀγάπην δέδωκεν ἡμῖν ὁ πατὴρ ἵνα τέκνα θεοῦ κληθῶμεν· καὶ ἐσμέν. διὰ τοῦτο ὁ κόσμος οὐ γινώσκει ἡμᾶς ὅτι οὐκ ἔγνω αὐτόν.

2 ἀγαπητοί, νῦν τέκνα θεοῦ ἐσμεν, καὶ οὔπω ἐφανερώθη τί ἐσόμεθα. οἴδαμεν ὅτι ἐὰν φανερωθῇ ὅμοιοι αὐτῶ ἐσόμεθα, ὅτι ὀψόμεθα αὐτὸν καθώς ἐστιν.

3 καὶ πᾶς ὁ ἔχων τὴν ἐλπίδα ταύτην ἐπ᾽ αὐτῶ ἁγνίζει ἑαυτὸν καθὼς ἐκεῖνος ἁγνός ἐστιν.

4 πᾶς ὁ ποιῶν τὴν ἁμαρτίαν καὶ τὴν ἀνομίαν ποιεῖ, καὶ ἡ ἁμαρτία ἐστὶν ἡ ἀνομία.

5 καὶ οἴδατε ὅτι ἐκεῖνος ἐφανερώθη ἵνα τὰς ἁμαρτίας ἄρῃ, καὶ ἁμαρτία ἐν αὐτῶ οὐκ ἔστιν.

6 πᾶς ὁ ἐν αὐτῶ μένων οὐχ ἁμαρτάνει· πᾶς ὁ ἁμαρτάνων οὐχ ἑώρακεν αὐτὸν οὐδὲ ἔγνωκεν αὐτόν.

7 τεκνία, μηδεὶς πλανάτω ὑμᾶς· ὁ ποιῶν τὴν δικαιοσύνην δίκαιός ἐστιν, καθὼς ἐκεῖνος δίκαιός ἐστιν·

8 ὁ ποιῶν τὴν ἁμαρτίαν ἐκ τοῦ διαβόλου ἐστίν, ὅτι ἀπ᾽ ἀρχῆς ὁ διάβολος ἁμαρτάνει. εἰς τοῦτο ἐφανερώθη ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ, ἵνα λύσῃ τὰ ἔργα τοῦ διαβόλου.

9 πᾶς ὁ γεγεννημένος ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ ἁμαρτίαν οὐ ποιεῖ, ὅτι σπέρμα αὐτοῦ ἐν αὐτῶ μένει· καὶ οὐ δύναται ἁμαρτάνειν, ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ γεγέννηται.

10 ἐν τούτῳ φανερά ἐστιν τὰ τέκνα τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ τὰ τέκνα τοῦ διαβόλου· πᾶς ὁ μὴ ποιῶν δικαιοσύνην οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ, καὶ ὁ μὴ ἀγαπῶν τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ.

11 ὅτι αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ ἀγγελία ἣν ἠκούσατε ἀπ᾽ ἀρχῆς, ἵνα ἀγαπῶμεν ἀλλήλους·

12 οὐ καθὼς κάϊν ἐκ τοῦ πονηροῦ ἦν καὶ ἔσφαξεν τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ· καὶ χάριν τίνος ἔσφαξεν αὐτόν; ὅτι τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ πονηρὰ ἦν, τὰ δὲ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ δίκαια.

13 [καὶ] μὴ θαυμάζετε, ἀδελφοί, εἰ μισεῖ ὑμᾶς ὁ κόσμος.

14 ἡμεῖς οἴδαμεν ὅτι μεταβεβήκαμεν ἐκ τοῦ θανάτου εἰς τὴν ζωήν, ὅτι ἀγαπῶμεν τοὺς ἀδελφούς· ὁ μὴ ἀγαπῶν μένει ἐν τῶ θανάτῳ.

15 πᾶς ὁ μισῶν τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ ἀνθρωποκτόνος ἐστίν, καὶ οἴδατε ὅτι πᾶς ἀνθρωποκτόνος οὐκ ἔχει ζωὴν αἰώνιον ἐν αὐτῶ μένουσαν.

16 ἐν τούτῳ ἐγνώκαμεν τὴν ἀγάπην, ὅτι ἐκεῖνος ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἔθηκεν· καὶ ἡμεῖς ὀφείλομεν ὑπὲρ τῶν ἀδελφῶν τὰς ψυχὰς θεῖναι.

17 ὃς δ᾽ ἂν ἔχῃ τὸν βίον τοῦ κόσμου καὶ θεωρῇ τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ χρείαν ἔχοντα καὶ κλείσῃ τὰ σπλάγχνα αὐτοῦ ἀπ᾽ αὐτοῦ, πῶς ἡ ἀγάπη τοῦ θεοῦ μένει ἐν αὐτῶ;

18 τεκνία, μὴ ἀγαπῶμεν λόγῳ μηδὲ τῇ γλώσσῃ ἀλλὰ ἐν ἔργῳ καὶ ἀληθείᾳ.

19 [καὶ] ἐν τούτῳ γνωσόμεθα ὅτι ἐκ τῆς ἀληθείας ἐσμέν, καὶ ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ πείσομεν τὴν καρδίαν ἡμῶν

20 ὅτι ἐὰν καταγινώσκῃ ἡμῶν ἡ καρδία, ὅτι μείζων ἐστὶν ὁ θεὸς τῆς καρδίας ἡμῶν καὶ γινώσκει πάντα.

21 ἀγαπητοί, ἐὰν ἡ καρδία [ἡμῶν] μὴ καταγινώσκῃ, παρρησίαν ἔχομεν πρὸς τὸν θεόν,

22 καὶ ὃ ἐὰν αἰτῶμεν λαμβάνομεν ἀπ᾽ αὐτοῦ, ὅτι τὰς ἐντολὰς αὐτοῦ τηροῦμεν καὶ τὰ ἀρεστὰ ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ ποιοῦμεν.

23 καὶ αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ ἐντολὴ αὐτοῦ, ἵνα πιστεύσωμεν τῶ ὀνόματι τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ ἰησοῦ χριστοῦ καὶ ἀγαπῶμεν ἀλλήλους, καθὼς ἔδωκεν ἐντολὴν ἡμῖν.

24 καὶ ὁ τηρῶν τὰς ἐντολὰς αὐτοῦ ἐν αὐτῶ μένει καὶ αὐτὸς ἐν αὐτῶ· καὶ ἐν τούτῳ γινώσκομεν ὅτι μένει ἐν ἡμῖν, ἐκ τοῦ πνεύματος οὖ ἡμῖν ἔδωκεν.

1  Behold,¹⁴⁹² what manner⁴²¹⁷ of love²⁶ the³⁵⁸⁸ Father³⁹⁶² hath bestowed¹³²⁵ upon us,²²⁵⁴ that²⁴⁴³ we should be called²⁵⁶⁴ the sons⁵⁰⁴³ of God:²³¹⁶ therefore^{1223 5124} the³⁵⁸⁸ world²⁸⁸⁹ knoweth¹⁰⁹⁷ us²²⁴⁸ not,³⁷⁵⁶ because³⁷⁵⁴ it knew¹⁰⁹⁷ him⁸⁴⁶ not.³⁷⁵⁶

3  And²⁵³² every man³⁹⁵⁶ that hath²¹⁹² this⁵⁰²⁶ hope¹⁶⁸⁰ in¹⁹⁰⁹ him⁸⁴⁶ purifieth⁴⁸ himself,¹⁴³⁸ even as²⁵³¹ he¹⁵⁶⁵ is²⁰⁷⁶ pure.⁵³

4  Whosoever³⁹⁵⁶ committeth⁴¹⁶⁰ sin²⁶⁶ transgresseth also the law:^{4160 2532 458} for²⁵³² sin²⁶⁶ is²⁰⁷⁶ the³⁵⁸⁸ transgression of the law.⁴⁵⁸

5  And²⁵³² ye know¹⁴⁹² that³⁷⁵⁴ he¹⁵⁶⁵ was manifested⁵³¹⁹ to²⁴⁴³ take away¹⁴² our²²⁵⁷ sins;²⁶⁶ and²⁵³² in¹⁷²² him⁸⁴⁶ is²⁰⁷⁶ no³⁷⁵⁶ sin.²⁶⁶

6  Whosoever³⁹⁵⁶ abideth³³⁰⁶ in¹⁷²² him⁸⁴⁶ sinneth²⁶⁴ not:³⁷⁵⁶ whosoever³⁹⁵⁶ sinneth²⁶⁴ hath not³⁷⁵⁶ seen³⁷⁰⁸ him,⁸⁴⁶ neither³⁷⁶¹ known¹⁰⁹⁷ him.⁸⁴⁶

7  Little children,⁵⁰⁴⁰ let no man³³⁶⁷ deceive⁴¹⁰⁵ you:⁵²⁰⁹ he that doeth⁴¹⁶⁰ righteousness¹³⁴³ is²⁰⁷⁶ righteous,¹³⁴² even as²⁵³¹ he¹⁵⁶⁵ is²⁰⁷⁶ righteous.¹³⁴²

8  He that committeth⁴¹⁶⁰ sin²⁶⁶ is²⁰⁷⁶ of¹⁵³⁷ the³⁵⁸⁸ devil;¹²²⁸ for³⁷⁵⁴ the³⁵⁸⁸ devil¹²²⁸ sinneth²⁶⁴ from⁵⁷⁵ the beginning.⁷⁴⁶ For¹⁵¹⁹ this purpose⁵¹²⁴ the³⁵⁸⁸ Son⁵²⁰⁷ of God²³¹⁶ was manifested,⁵³¹⁹ that²⁴⁴³ he might destroy³⁰⁸⁹ the³⁵⁸⁸ works²⁰⁴¹ of the³⁵⁸⁸ devil.¹²²⁸

9  Whosoever³⁹⁵⁶ is born¹⁰⁸⁰ of¹⁵³⁷ God²³¹⁶ doth not³⁷⁵⁶ commit⁴¹⁶⁰ sin;²⁶⁶ for³⁷⁵⁴ his⁸⁴⁸ seed⁴⁶⁹⁰ remaineth³³⁰⁶ in¹⁷²² him:⁸⁴⁶ and²⁵³² he cannot^{1410 3756} sin,²⁶⁴ because³⁷⁵⁴ he is born¹⁰⁸⁰ of¹⁵³⁷ God.²³¹⁶

10  In¹⁷²² this⁵¹²⁹ the³⁵⁸⁸ children⁵⁰⁴³ of God²³¹⁶ are²⁰⁷⁶ manifest,⁵³¹⁸ and²⁵³² the³⁵⁸⁸ children⁵⁰⁴³ of the³⁵⁸⁸ devil:¹²²⁸ whosoever³⁹⁵⁶ doeth⁴¹⁶⁰ not³³⁶¹ righteousness¹³⁴³ is²⁰⁷⁶ not³⁷⁵⁶ of¹⁵³⁷ God,²³¹⁶ neither²⁵³² he that loveth²⁵ not³³⁶¹ his⁸⁴⁸ brother.⁸⁰

11  For³⁷⁵⁴ this³⁷⁷⁸ is²⁰⁷⁶ the³⁵⁸⁸ message³¹ that³⁷³⁹ ye heard¹⁹¹ from⁵⁷⁵ the beginning,⁷⁴⁶ that²⁴⁴³ we should love²⁵ one another.²⁴⁰

12  Not³⁷⁵⁶ as²⁵³¹ Cain,²⁵³⁵ who was²²⁵⁸ of¹⁵³⁷ that wicked one,⁴¹⁹⁰ and²⁵³² slew⁴⁹⁶⁹ his⁸⁴⁸ brother.⁸⁰ And²⁵³² wherefore^{5484 5101} slew⁴⁹⁶⁹ he him?⁸⁴⁶ Because³⁷⁵⁴ his own⁸⁴⁸ works²⁰⁴¹ were²²⁵⁸ evil,⁴¹⁹⁰ and¹¹⁶¹ his⁸⁴⁸ brother's⁸⁰ righteous.¹³⁴²

13  Marvel²²⁹⁶ not,³³⁶¹ my³⁴⁵⁰ brethren,⁸⁰ if¹⁴⁸⁷ the³⁵⁸⁸ world²⁸⁸⁹ hate³⁴⁰⁴ you.⁵²⁰⁹

14  We²²⁴⁹ know¹⁴⁹² that³⁷⁵⁴ we have passed³³²⁷ from¹⁵³⁷ death²²⁸⁸ unto¹⁵¹⁹ life,²²²² because³⁷⁵⁴ we love²⁵ the³⁵⁸⁸ brethren.⁸⁰ He that loveth²⁵ not³³⁶¹ his brother⁸⁰ abideth³³⁰⁶ in¹⁷²² death.²²⁸⁸

15  Whosoever³⁹⁵⁶ hateth³⁴⁰⁴ his⁸⁴⁸ brother⁸⁰ is²⁰⁷⁶ a murderer:⁴⁴³ and²⁵³² ye know¹⁴⁹² that³⁷⁵⁴ no^{3956 3756} murderer⁴⁴³ hath²¹⁹² eternal¹⁶⁶ life²²²² abiding³³⁰⁶ in¹⁷²² him.⁸⁴⁶

17  But¹¹⁶¹ whoso^{3739 302} hath²¹⁹² this world's²⁸⁸⁹ good,⁹⁷⁹ and²⁵³² seeth²³³⁴ his⁸⁴⁸ brother⁸⁰ have²¹⁹² need,⁵⁵³² and²⁵³² shutteth up²⁸⁰⁸ his⁸⁴⁸ bowels⁴⁶⁹⁸ of compassion from⁵⁷⁵ him,⁸⁴⁶ how⁴⁴⁵⁹ dwelleth³³⁰⁶ the³⁵⁸⁸ love²⁶ of God²³¹⁶ in¹⁷²² him?⁸⁴⁶

18  My³⁴⁵⁰ little children,⁵⁰⁴⁰ let us not³³⁶¹ love²⁵ in word,³⁰⁵⁶ neither³³⁶⁶ in tongue;¹¹⁰⁰ but²³⁵ in deed²⁰⁴¹ and²⁵³² in truth.²²⁵

19  And²⁵³² hereby^{1722 5129} we know¹⁰⁹⁷ that³⁷⁵⁴ we are²⁰⁷⁰ of¹⁵³⁷ the³⁵⁸⁸ truth,²²⁵ and²⁵³² shall assure³⁹⁸² our²²⁵⁷ hearts²⁵⁸⁸ before¹⁷¹⁵ him.⁸⁴⁶

20  For³⁷⁵⁴ if¹⁴³⁷ our²²⁵⁷ heart²⁵⁸⁸ condemn²⁶⁰⁷ us,³⁷⁵⁴ God²³¹⁶ is²⁰⁷⁶ greater³¹⁸⁷ than our²²⁵⁷ heart,²⁵⁸⁸ and²⁵³² knoweth¹⁰⁹⁷ all things.³⁹⁵⁶

21  Beloved,²⁷ if¹⁴³⁷ our²²⁵⁷ heart²⁵⁸⁸ condemn²⁶⁰⁷ us²²⁵⁷ not,³³⁶¹ then have²¹⁹² we confidence³⁹⁵⁴ toward⁴³¹⁴ God.²³¹⁶

22  And²⁵³² whatsoever^{3739 1437} we ask,¹⁵⁴ we receive²⁹⁸³ of³⁸⁴⁴ him,⁸⁴⁶ because³⁷⁵⁴ we keep⁵⁰⁸³ his⁸⁴⁸ commandments,¹⁷⁸⁵ and²⁵³² do⁴¹⁶⁰ those things that are pleasing⁷⁰¹ in his sight.^{1799 846}

10 In hoc manifesti sunt filii Dei, et filii diaboli. Omnis qui non est justus, non est ex Deo, et qui non diligit fratrem suum:

11 quoniam hæc est annuntiatio, quam audistis ab initio, ut diligatis alterutrum.

12 Non sicut Cain, qui ex maligno erat, et occidit fratrem suum. Et propter quid occidit eum? Quoniam opera ejus maligna erant: fratris autem ejus, justa.

13 Nolite mirari, fratres, si odit vos mundus.

14 Nos scimus quoniam translati sumus de morte ad vitam, quoniam diligimus fratres. Qui non diligit, manet in morte:

15 omnis qui odit fratrem suum, homicida est. Et scitis quoniam omnis homicida non habet vitam æternam in semetipso manentem.

16 In hoc cognovimus caritatem Dei, quoniam ille animam suam pro nobis posuit: et nos debemus pro fratribus animas ponere.

17 Qui habuerit substantiam hujus mundi, et viderit fratrem suum necessitatem habere, et clauserit viscera sua ab eo: quomodo caritas Dei manet in eo?

18 Filioli mei, non diligamus verbo neque lingua, sed opere et veritate:

19 in hoc cognoscimus quoniam ex veritate sumus: et in conspectu ejus suadebimus corda nostra.

20 Quoniam si reprehenderit nos cor nostrum: major est Deus corde nostro, et novit omnia.

21 Carissimi, si cor nostrum non reprehenderit nos, fiduciam habemus ad Deum:

22 et quidquid petierimus, accipiemus ab eo: quoniam mandata ejus custodimus, et ea, quæ sunt placita coram eo, facimus.

23 Et hoc est mandatum ejus: ut credamus in nomine Filii ejus Jesu Christi: et diligamus alterutrum, sicut dedit mandatum nobis.

24 Et qui servat mandata ejus, in illo manet, et ipse in eo: et in hoc scimus quoniam manet in nobis, de Spiritu quem dedit nobis.
