1  Now the word¹⁶⁹⁷ of the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ came¹⁹⁶¹ unto⁴¹³ Jonah³¹²⁴ the son¹¹²¹ of Amittai,⁵⁷³ saying,⁵⁵⁹

2  Arise,⁶⁹⁶⁵ go¹⁹⁸⁰ to⁴¹³ Nineveh,⁵²¹⁰ that great¹⁴¹⁹ city,⁵⁸⁹² and cry⁷¹²¹ against⁵⁹²¹ it; for³⁵⁸⁸ their wickedness⁷⁴⁵¹ is come up⁵⁹²⁷ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ me.

3  But Jonah³¹²⁴ rose up⁶⁹⁶⁵ to flee¹²⁷² unto Tarshish⁸⁶⁵⁹ from the presence^{4480 6440} of the LORD,³⁰⁶⁸ and went down³³⁸¹ to Joppa;³³⁰⁵ and he found⁴⁶⁷² a ship⁵⁹¹ going⁹³⁵ to Tarshish:⁸⁶⁵⁹ so he paid⁵⁴¹⁴ the fare⁷⁹³⁹ thereof, and went down³³⁸¹ into it, to go⁹³⁵ with⁵⁹⁷³ them unto Tarshish⁸⁶⁵⁹ from the presence^{4480 6440} of the LORD.³⁰⁶⁸

4  But the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ sent out²⁹⁰⁴ a great¹⁴¹⁹ wind⁷³⁰⁷ into⁴¹³ the sea,³²²⁰ and there was¹⁹⁶¹ a mighty¹⁴¹⁹ tempest⁵⁵⁹¹ in the sea,³²²⁰ so that the ship⁵⁹¹ was like²⁸⁰³ to be broken.⁷⁶⁶⁵

5  Then the mariners⁴⁴¹⁹ were afraid,³³⁷² and cried²¹⁹⁹ every man³⁷⁶ unto⁴¹³ his god,⁴³⁰ and cast forth^{2904 853} the wares³⁶²⁷ that⁸³⁴ were in the ship⁵⁹¹ into⁴¹³ the sea,³²²⁰ to lighten⁷⁰⁴³ it of^{4480 5921} them. But Jonah³¹²⁴ was gone down³³⁸¹ into⁴¹³ the sides³⁴¹¹ of the ship;⁵⁶⁰⁰ and he lay,⁷⁹⁰¹ and was fast asleep.⁷²⁹⁰

6  So the shipmaster^{7227 2259} came⁷¹²⁶ to⁴¹³ him, and said⁵⁵⁹ unto him, What⁴¹⁰⁰ meanest thou, O sleeper?⁷²⁹⁰ arise,⁶⁹⁶⁵ call⁷¹²¹ upon⁴¹³ thy God,⁴³⁰ if so be¹⁹⁴ that God⁴³⁰ will think⁶²⁴⁵ upon us, that we perish⁶ not.³⁸⁰⁸

7  And they said⁵⁵⁹ every one³⁷⁶ to⁴¹³ his fellow,⁷⁴⁵³ Come,¹⁹⁸⁰ and let us cast⁵³⁰⁷ lots,¹⁴⁸⁶ that we may know³⁰⁴⁵ for whose cause^{7945 4310} this²⁰⁶³ evil⁷⁴⁵¹ is upon us. So they cast⁵³⁰⁷ lots,¹⁴⁸⁶ and the lot¹⁴⁸⁶ fell⁵³⁰⁷ upon⁵⁹²¹ Jonah.³¹²⁴

8  Then said⁵⁵⁹ they unto⁴¹³ him, Tell⁵⁰⁴⁶ us, we pray thee,⁴⁹⁹⁴ for whose cause^{834 4310} this²⁰⁶³ evil⁷⁴⁵¹ is upon us; What⁴¹⁰⁰ is thine occupation?⁴³⁹⁹ and whence^{4480 370} comest⁹³⁵ thou? what⁴¹⁰⁰ is thy country?⁷⁷⁶ and of what^{335 4480 2088} people⁵⁹⁷¹ art thou?⁸⁵⁹

9  And he said⁵⁵⁹ unto⁴¹³ them, I⁵⁹⁵ am a Hebrew;⁵⁶⁸⁰ and I⁵⁸⁹ fear³³⁷² the LORD,³⁰⁶⁸ the God⁴³⁰ of heaven,⁸⁰⁶⁴ which⁸³⁴ hath made^{6213 853} the sea³²²⁰ and the dry³⁰⁰⁴ land.

10  Then were the men³⁷⁶ exceedingly¹⁴¹⁹ afraid,^{3372 3374} and said⁵⁵⁹ unto⁴¹³ him, Why⁴¹⁰⁰ hast thou done⁶²¹³ this?²⁰⁶³ For³⁵⁸⁸ the men³⁷⁶ knew³⁰⁴⁵ that³⁵⁸⁸ he¹⁹³¹ fled¹²⁷² from the presence^{4480 6440} of the LORD,³⁰⁶⁸ because³⁵⁸⁸ he had told⁵⁰⁴⁶ them.

11  Then said⁵⁵⁹ they unto⁴¹³ him, What⁴¹⁰⁰ shall we do⁶²¹³ unto thee, that the sea³²²⁰ may be calm⁸³⁶⁷ unto^{4480 5921} us? for³⁵⁸⁸ the sea³²²⁰ wrought,¹⁹⁸⁰ and was tempestuous.⁵⁵⁹⁰

12  And he said⁵⁵⁹ unto⁴¹³ them, Take me up,⁵³⁷⁵ and cast me forth²⁹⁰⁴ into⁴¹³ the sea;³²²⁰ so shall the sea³²²⁰ be calm⁸³⁶⁷ unto^{4480 5921} you: for³⁵⁸⁸ I⁵⁸⁹ know³⁰⁴⁵ that³⁵⁸⁸ for my sake⁷⁹⁴⁵ this²⁰⁸⁸ great¹⁴¹⁹ tempest⁵⁵⁹¹ is upon⁵⁹²¹ you.

13  Nevertheless the men³⁷⁶ rowed²⁸⁶⁴ hard to bring⁷⁷²⁵ it to⁴¹³ the land;³⁰⁰⁴ but they could³²⁰¹ not:³⁸⁰⁸ for³⁵⁸⁸ the sea³²²⁰ wrought,¹⁹⁸⁰ and was tempestuous⁵⁵⁹⁰ against⁵⁹²¹ them.

14  Wherefore they cried⁷¹²¹ unto⁴¹³ the LORD,³⁰⁶⁸ and said,⁵⁵⁹ We beseech thee,⁴⁹⁹⁴ O LORD,³⁰⁶⁸ we beseech thee,⁵⁷⁷ let us not⁴⁰⁸ perish⁶ for this²⁰⁸⁸ man's³⁷⁶ life,⁵³¹⁵ and lay⁵⁴¹⁴ not⁴⁰⁸ upon⁵⁹²¹ us innocent⁵³⁵⁵ blood:¹⁸¹⁸ for³⁵⁸⁸ thou,⁸⁵⁹ O LORD,³⁰⁶⁸ hast done⁶²¹³ as⁸³⁴ it pleased²⁶⁵⁴ thee.

15  So they took up^{5375 853} Jonah,³¹²⁴ and cast him forth²⁹⁰⁴ into⁴¹³ the sea:³²²⁰ and the sea³²²⁰ ceased⁵⁹⁷⁵ from her raging.^{4480 2197}

16  Then the men³⁷⁶ feared^{3372 3374 853} the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ exceedingly,¹⁴¹⁹ and offered²⁰⁷⁶ a sacrifice²⁰⁷⁷ unto the LORD,³⁰⁶⁸ and made⁵⁰⁸⁷ vows.⁵⁰⁸⁸

17  Now the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ had prepared⁴⁴⁸⁷ a great¹⁴¹⁹ fish¹⁷⁰⁹ to swallow up^{1104 853} Jonah.³¹²⁴ And Jonah³¹²⁴ was¹⁹⁶¹ in the belly⁴⁵⁷⁸ of the fish¹⁷⁰⁹ three⁷⁹⁶⁹ days³¹¹⁷ and three⁷⁹⁶⁹ nights.³⁹¹⁵

1 καὶ ἐγένετο λόγος κυρίου πρὸς Ιωναν τὸν τοῦ Αμαθι λέγων

2 ἀνάστηθι καὶ πορεύθητι εἰς Νινευη τὴν πόλιν τὴν μεγάλην καὶ κήρυξον ἐν αὐτῇ ὅτι ἀνέβη ἡ κραυγὴ τῆς κακίας αὐτῆς πρός με

3 καὶ ἀνέστη Ιωνας τοῦ φυγεῖν εἰς Θαρσις ἐκ προσώπου κυρίου καὶ κατέβη εἰς Ιοππην καὶ εὗρεν πλοῖον βαδίζον εἰς Θαρσις καὶ ἔδωκεν τὸ ναῦλον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐνέβη εἰς αὐτὸ τοῦ πλεῦσαι μετ᾽ αὐτῶν εἰς Θαρσις ἐκ προσώπου κυρίου

4 καὶ κύριος ἐξήγειρεν πνεῦμα εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ ἐγένετο κλύδων μέγας ἐν τῇ θαλάσσῃ καὶ τὸ πλοῖον ἐκινδύνευεν συντριβῆναι

5 καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν οἱ ναυτικοὶ καὶ ἀνεβόων ἕκαστος πρὸς τὸν θεὸν αὐτῶν καὶ ἐκβολὴν ἐποιήσαντο τῶν σκευῶν τῶν ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν τοῦ κουφισθῆναι ἀπ᾽ αὐτῶν Ιωνας δὲ κατέβη εἰς τὴν κοίλην τοῦ πλοίου καὶ ἐκάθευδεν καὶ ἔρρεγχεν

6 καὶ προσῆλθεν πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ πρωρεὺς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ τί σὺ ῥέγχεις ἀνάστα καὶ ἐπικαλοῦ τὸν θεόν σου ὅπως διασώσῃ ὁ θεὸς ἡμᾶς καὶ μὴ ἀπολώμεθα

7 καὶ εἶπεν ἕκαστος πρὸς τὸν πλησίον αὐτοῦ δεῦτε βάλωμεν κλήρους καὶ ἐπιγνῶμεν τίνος ἕνεκεν ἡ κακία αὕτη ἐστὶν ἐν ἡμῖν καὶ ἔβαλον κλήρους καὶ ἔπεσεν ὁ κλῆρος ἐπὶ Ιωναν

8 καὶ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτόν ἀπάγγειλον ἡμῖν τίνος ἕνεκεν ἡ κακία αὕτη ἐστὶν ἐν ἡμῖν τίς σου ἡ ἐργασία ἐστίν καὶ πόθεν ἔρχῃ καὶ ἐκ ποίας χώρας καὶ ἐκ ποίου λαοῦ εἶ σύ

9 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς δοῦλος κυρίου ἐγώ εἰμι καὶ τὸν κύριον θεὸν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἐγὼ σέβομαι ὃς ἐποίησεν τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ τὴν ξηράν

10 καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν οἱ ἄνδρες φόβον μέγαν καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτόν τί τοῦτο ἐποίησας διότι ἔγνωσαν οἱ ἄνδρες ὅτι ἐκ προσώπου κυρίου ἦν φεύγων ὅτι ἀπήγγειλεν αὐτοῖς

11 καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτόν τί σοι ποιήσωμεν καὶ κοπάσει ἡ θάλασσα ἀφ᾽ ἡμῶν ὅτι ἡ θάλασσα ἐπορεύετο καὶ ἐξήγειρεν μᾶλλον κλύδωνα

12 καὶ εἶπεν Ιωνας πρὸς αὐτούς ἄρατέ με καὶ ἐμβάλετέ με εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ κοπάσει ἡ θάλασσα ἀφ᾽ ὑμῶν διότι ἔγνωκα ἐγὼ ὅτι δι᾽ ἐμὲ ὁ κλύδων ὁ μέγας οὗτος ἐφ᾽ ὑμᾶς ἐστιν

13 καὶ παρεβιάζοντο οἱ ἄνδρες τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι πρὸς τὴν γῆν καὶ οὐκ ἠδύναντο ὅτι ἡ θάλασσα ἐπορεύετο καὶ ἐξηγείρετο μᾶλλον ἐπ᾽ αὐτούς

14 καὶ ἀνεβόησαν πρὸς κύριον καὶ εἶπαν μηδαμῶς κύριε μὴ ἀπολώμεθα ἕνεκεν τῆς ψυχῆς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου καὶ μὴ δῷς ἐφ᾽ ἡμᾶς αἷμα δίκαιον ὅτι σύ κύριε ὃν τρόπον ἐβούλου πεποίηκας

15 καὶ ἔλαβον τὸν Ιωναν καὶ ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ ἔστη ἡ θάλασσα ἐκ τοῦ σάλου αὐτῆς

16 καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν οἱ ἄνδρες φόβῳ μεγάλῳ τὸν κύριον καὶ ἔθυσαν θυσίαν τῷ κυρίῳ καὶ εὔξαντο εὐχάς

‎1 ‏וַֽיְהִי֙ דְּבַר־יְהוָ֔ה אֶל־יוֹנָ֥ה בֶן־אֲמִתַּ֖י לֵאמֹֽר׃

‎2 ‏ק֠וּם לֵ֧ךְ אֶל־נִֽינְוֵ֛ה הָעִ֥יר הַגְּדוֹלָ֖ה וּקְרָ֣א עָלֶ֑יהָ כִּֽי־עָלְתָ֥ה רָעָתָ֖ם לְפָנָֽי׃

‎3 ‏וַיָּ֤קָם יוֹנָה֙ לִבְרֹ֣חַ תַּרְשִׁ֔ישָׁה מִלִּפְנֵ֖י יְהוָ֑ה וַיֵּ֨רֶד יָפ֜וֹ וַיִּמְצָ֥א אָנִיָּ֣ה׀¹ בָּאָ֣ה תַרְשִׁ֗ישׁ וַיִּתֵּ֨ן שְׂכָרָ֜הּ וַיֵּ֤רֶד בָּהּ֙ לָב֤וֹא עִמָּהֶם֙ תַּרְשִׁ֔ישָׁה מִלִּפְנֵ֖י יְהוָֽה׃

‎4 ‏וַֽיהוָ֗ה הֵטִ֤יל רֽוּחַ־גְּדוֹלָה֙ אֶל־הַיָּ֔ם וַיְהִ֥י סַֽעַר־גָּד֖וֹל בַּיָּ֑ם וְהָ֣אֳנִיָּ֔ה חִשְּׁבָ֖ה לְהִשָּׁבֵֽר׃

‎5 ‏וַיִּֽירְא֣וּ הַמַּלָּחִ֗ים וַֽיִּזְעֲקוּ֮ אִ֣ישׁ אֶל־אֱלֹהָיו֒ וַיָּטִ֨לוּ אֶת־הַכֵּלִ֜ים אֲשֶׁ֤ר בָּֽאֳנִיָּה֙ אֶל־הַיָּ֔ם לְהָקֵ֖ל מֵֽעֲלֵיהֶ֑ם וְיוֹנָ֗ה יָרַד֙ אֶל־יַרְכְּתֵ֣י הַסְּפִינָ֔ה וַיִּשְׁכַּ֖ב וַיֵּרָדַֽם׃

‎6 ‏וַיִּקְרַ֤ב אֵלָיו֙ רַ֣ב הַחֹבֵ֔ל וַיֹּ֥אמֶר ל֖וֹ מַה־לְּךָ֣ נִרְדָּ֑ם ק֚וּם קְרָ֣א אֶל־אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ אוּלַ֞י יִתְעַשֵּׁ֧ת הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים לָ֖נוּ וְלֹ֥א נֹאבֵֽד׃

‎7 ‏וַיֹּאמְר֞וּ אִ֣ישׁ אֶל־רֵעֵ֗הוּ לְכוּ֙ וְנַפִּ֣ילָה גֽוֹרָל֔וֹת וְנֵ֣דְעָ֔ה בְּשֶׁלְּמִ֛י הָרָעָ֥ה הַזֹּ֖את לָ֑נוּ וַיַּפִּ֙לוּ֙ גּֽוֹרָל֔וֹת וַיִּפֹּ֥ל הַגּוֹרָ֖ל עַל־יוֹנָֽה׃

‎8 ‏וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵלָ֔יו הַגִּידָה־נָּ֣א לָ֔נוּ בַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר לְמִי־הָרָעָ֥ה הַזֹּ֖את לָ֑נוּ מַה־מְּלַאכְתְּךָ֙ וּמֵאַ֣יִן תָּב֔וֹא מָ֣ה אַרְצֶ֔ךָ וְאֵֽי־מִזֶּ֥ה עַ֖ם אָֽתָּה׃

‎9 ‏וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם עִבְרִ֣י אָנֹ֑כִי וְאֶת־יְהוָ֞ה אֱלֹהֵ֤י הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ אֲנִ֣י יָרֵ֔א אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂ֥ה אֶת־הַיָּ֖ם וְאֶת־הַיַּבָּשָֽׁה׃

‎10 ‏וַיִּֽירְא֤וּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ יִרְאָ֣ה גְדוֹלָ֔ה וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ אֵלָ֖יו מַה־זֹּ֣את עָשִׂ֑יתָ כִּֽי־יָדְע֣וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים כִּֽי־מִלִּפְנֵ֤י יְהוָה֙ ה֣וּא בֹרֵ֔חַ כִּ֥י הִגִּ֖יד לָהֶֽם׃

‎11 ‏וַיֹּאמְר֤וּ אֵלָיו֙ מַה־נַּ֣עֲשֶׂה לָּ֔ךְ וְיִשְׁתֹּ֥ק הַיָּ֖ם מֵֽעָלֵ֑ינוּ כִּ֥י הַיָּ֖ם הוֹלֵ֥ךְ וְסֹעֵֽר׃

‎12 ‏וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם שָׂא֙וּנִי֙ וַהֲטִילֻ֣נִי אֶל־הַיָּ֔ם וְיִשְׁתֹּ֥ק הַיָּ֖ם מֵֽעֲלֵיכֶ֑ם כִּ֚י יוֹדֵ֣עַ אָ֔נִי כִּ֣י בְשֶׁלִּ֔י הַסַּ֧עַר הַגָּד֛וֹל הַזֶּ֖ה עֲלֵיכֶֽם׃

‎13 ‏וַיַּחְתְּר֣וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֗ים לְהָשִׁ֛יב אֶל־הַיַּבָּשָׁ֖ה וְלֹ֣א יָכֹ֑לוּ כִּ֣י הַיָּ֔ם הוֹלֵ֥ךְ וְסֹעֵ֖ר עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃

‎14 ‏וַיִּקְרְא֨וּ אֶל־יְהוָ֜ה וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ אָנָּ֤ה יְהוָה֙ אַל־נָ֣א נֹאבְדָ֗ה בְּנֶ֙פֶשׁ֙ הָאִ֣ישׁ הַזֶּ֔ה וְאַל־תִּתֵּ֥ן עָלֵ֖ינוּ דָּ֣ם נָקִ֑יא כִּֽי־אַתָּ֣ה יְהוָ֔ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר חָפַ֖צְתָּ עָשִֽׂיתָ׃

‎15 ‏וַיִּשְׂאוּ֙ אֶת־יוֹנָ֔ה וַיְטִלֻ֖הוּ אֶל־הַיָּ֑ם וַיַּעֲמֹ֥ד הַיָּ֖ם מִזַּעְפּֽוֹ׃

‎16 ‏וַיִּֽירְא֧וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֛ים יִרְאָ֥ה גְדוֹלָ֖ה אֶת־יְהוָ֑ה וַיִּֽזְבְּחוּ־זֶ֙בַח֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה וַֽיִּדְּר֖וּ נְדָרִֽים׃

Vul

1 Et factum est verbum Domini ad Jonam, filium Amathi, dicens:

2 Surge, et vade in Niniven, civitatem grandem, et prædica in ea, quia ascendit malitia ejus coram me.

3 Et surrexit Jonas, ut fugeret in Tharsis a facie Domini, et descendit in Joppen: et invenit navem euntem in Tharsis, et dedit naulum ejus, et descendit in eam ut iret cum eis in Tharsis a facie Domini.

4 Dominus autem misit ventum magnum in mare: et facta est tempestas magna in mari, et navis periclitabatur conteri.

5 Et timuerunt nautæ, et clamaverunt viri ad deum suum, et miserunt vasa quæ erant in navi, in mare, ut alleviaretur ab eis; et Jonas descendit ad interiora navis, et dormiebat sopore gravi.

6 Et accessit ad eum gubernator, et dixit ei: Quid tu sopore deprimeris? surge, invoca Deum tuum, si forte recogitet Deus de nobis, et non pereamus.

7 Et dixit vir ad collegam suum: Venite et mittamus sortes, et sciamus quare hoc malum sit nobis. Et miserunt sortes, et cecidit sors super Jonam.

8 Et dixerunt ad eum: Indica nobis cujus causa malum istud sit nobis: quod est opus tuum? quæ terra tua, et quo vadis? vel ex quo populo es tu?

9 Et dixit ad eos: Hebræus ego sum, et Dominum Deum cæli ego timeo, qui fecit mare et aridam.

10 Et timuerunt viri timore magno, et dixerunt ad eum: Quid hoc fecisti? cognoverunt enim viri quod a facie Domini fugeret, quia indicaverat eis.

11 Et dixerunt ad eum: Quid faciemus tibi, et cessabit mare a nobis? quia mare ibat, et intumescebat.

12 Et dixit ad eos: Tollite me, et mittite in mare, et cessabit mare a vobis: scio enim ego quoniam propter me tempestas hæc grandis venit super vos.

13 Et remigabant viri ut reverterentur ad aridam, et non valebant, quia mare ibat, et intumescebat super eos.

14 Et clamaverunt ad Dominum, et dixerunt: Quæsumus, Domine, ne pereamus in anima viri istius, et ne des super nos sanguinem innocentem: quia tu, Domine, sicut voluisti, fecisti.

15 Et tulerunt Jonam, et miserunt in mare: et stetit mare a fervore suo.

16 Et timuerunt viri timore magno Dominum: et immolaverunt hostias Domino, et voverunt vota.
