1  My soul⁵³¹⁵ is weary⁵³⁵⁴ of my life;²⁴¹⁶ I will leave⁵⁸⁰⁰ my complaint⁷⁸⁷⁹ upon⁵⁹²¹ myself; I will speak¹⁶⁹⁶ in the bitterness⁴⁷⁵¹ of my soul.⁵³¹⁵

2  I will say⁵⁵⁹ unto⁴¹³ God,⁴³³ Do not⁴⁰⁸ condemn⁷⁵⁶¹ me; show³⁰⁴⁵ me wherefore^{5921 4100} thou contendest⁷³⁷⁸ with me.

3  Is it good²⁸⁹⁶ unto thee that³⁵⁸⁸ thou shouldest oppress,⁶²³¹ that³⁵⁸⁸ thou shouldest despise³⁹⁸⁸ the work³⁰¹⁸ of thine hands,³⁷⁰⁹ and shine³³¹³ upon⁵⁹²¹ the counsel⁶⁰⁹⁸ of the wicked?⁷⁵⁶³

4  Hast thou eyes⁵⁸⁶⁹ of flesh?¹³²⁰ or⁵¹⁸ seest⁷²⁰⁰ thou as man⁵⁸² seeth?⁷²⁰⁰

5  Are thy days³¹¹⁷ as the days³¹¹⁷ of man?⁵⁸² are thy years⁸¹⁴¹ as man's¹³⁹⁷ days,³¹¹⁷

6  That³⁵⁸⁸ thou inquirest¹²⁴⁵ after mine iniquity,⁵⁷⁷¹ and searchest¹⁸⁷⁵ after my sin?²⁴⁰³

7  Thou knowest¹⁸⁴⁷ that³⁵⁸⁸ I am not³⁸⁰⁸ wicked;⁷⁵⁶¹ and there is none³⁶⁹ that can deliver⁵³³⁷ out of thine hand.^{4480 3027}

8  Thine hands³⁰²⁷ have made⁶⁰⁸⁷ me and fashioned⁶²¹³ me together³¹⁶² round about;⁵⁴³⁹ yet thou dost destroy¹¹⁰⁴ me.

9  Remember,²¹⁴² I beseech thee,⁴⁹⁹⁴ that³⁵⁸⁸ thou hast made⁶²¹³ me as the clay;²⁵⁶³ and wilt thou bring me into dust again?^{7725 413 6083}

10  Hast thou not³⁸⁰⁸ poured me out⁵⁴¹³ as milk,²⁴⁶¹ and curdled⁷⁰⁸⁷ me like cheese?¹³⁸⁵

11  Thou hast clothed³⁸⁴⁷ me with skin⁵⁷⁸⁵ and flesh,¹³²⁰ and hast fenced⁷⁷⁵³ me with bones⁶¹⁰⁶ and sinews.¹⁵¹⁷

12  Thou hast granted^{6213 5978} me life²⁴¹⁶ and favor,²⁶¹⁷ and thy visitation⁶⁴⁸⁶ hath preserved⁸¹⁰⁴ my spirit.⁷³⁰⁷

13  And these⁴²⁸ things hast thou hid⁶⁸⁴⁵ in thine heart:³⁸²⁴ I know³⁰⁴⁵ that³⁵⁸⁸ this²⁰⁶³ is with⁵⁹⁷³ thee.

14  If⁵¹⁸ I sin,²³⁹⁸ then thou markest⁸¹⁰⁴ me, and thou wilt not³⁸⁰⁸ acquit⁵³⁵² me from mine iniquity.^{4480 5771}

15  If⁵¹⁸ I be wicked,⁷⁵⁶¹ woe⁴⁸⁰ unto me; and if I be righteous,⁶⁶⁶³ yet will I not³⁸⁰⁸ lift up⁵³⁷⁵ my head.⁷²¹⁸ I am full⁷⁶⁴⁹ of confusion;⁷⁰³⁶ therefore see⁷²⁰⁰ thou mine affliction;⁶⁰⁴⁰

16  For it increaseth.¹³⁴² Thou huntest⁶⁶⁷⁹ me as a fierce lion:⁷⁸²⁶ and again⁷⁷²⁵ thou showest thyself marvelous⁶³⁸¹ upon me.

17  Thou renewest²³¹⁸ thy witnesses⁵⁷⁰⁷ against⁵⁰⁴⁸ me, and increasest⁷²³⁵ thine indignation³⁷⁰⁸ upon⁵⁹⁷³ me; changes²⁴⁸⁷ and war⁶⁶³⁵ are against⁵⁹⁷³ me.

18  Wherefore⁴¹⁰⁰ then hast thou brought me forth³³¹⁸ out of the womb?^{4480 7358} Oh that I had given up the ghost,¹⁴⁷⁸ and no³⁸⁰⁸ eye⁵⁸⁶⁹ had seen⁷²⁰⁰ me!

19  I should have been¹⁹⁶¹ as though⁸³⁴ I had not³⁸⁰⁸ been;¹⁹⁶¹ I should have been carried²⁹⁸⁶ from the womb^{4480 990} to the grave.⁶⁹¹³

20  Are not³⁸⁰⁸ my days³¹¹⁷ few?⁴⁵⁹² cease²³⁰⁸ then, and let me alone,^{7896 4480} that I may take comfort¹⁰⁸² a little,⁴⁵⁹²

21  Before²⁹⁶² I go¹⁹⁸⁰ whence I shall not³⁸⁰⁸ return,⁷⁷²⁵ even to⁴¹³ the land⁷⁷⁶ of darkness²⁸²² and the shadow of death;⁶⁷⁵⁷

22  A land⁷⁷⁶ of darkness,⁵⁸⁹⁰ as³⁶⁴⁴ darkness⁶⁵² itself; and of the shadow of death,⁶⁷⁵⁷ without³⁸⁰⁸ any order,⁵⁴⁶⁸ and where the light³³¹³ is as³⁶⁴⁴ darkness.⁶⁵²

1 κάμνων τῇ ψυχῇ μου στένων ἐπαφήσω ἐπ᾽ αὐτὸν τὰ ῥήματά μου λαλήσω πικρίᾳ ψυχῆς μου συνεχόμενος

2 καὶ ἐρῶ πρὸς κύριον μή με ἀσεβεῖν δίδασκε καὶ διὰ τί με οὕτως ἔκρινας

3 ἦ καλόν σοι ἐὰν ἀδικήσω ὅτι ἀπείπω ἔργα χειρῶν σου βουλῇ δὲ ἀσεβῶν προσέσχες

4 ἦ ὥσπερ βροτὸς ὁρᾷ καθορᾷς ἢ καθὼς ὁρᾷ ἄνθρωπος βλέψῃ

5 ἦ ὁ βίος σου ἀνθρώπινός ἐστιν ἢ τὰ ἔτη σου ἀνδρός

6 ὅτι ἀνεζήτησας τὴν ἀνομίαν μου καὶ τὰς ἁμαρτίας μου ἐξιχνίασας

7 οἶδας γὰρ ὅτι οὐκ ἠσέβησα ἀλλὰ τίς ἐστιν ὁ ἐκ τῶν χειρῶν σου ἐξαιρούμενος

8 αἱ χεῖρές σου ἔπλασάν με καὶ ἐποίησάν με μετὰ ταῦτα μεταβαλών με ἔπαισας

9 μνήσθητι ὅτι πηλόν με ἔπλασας εἰς δὲ γῆν με πάλιν ἀποστρέφεις

10 ἦ οὐχ ὥσπερ γάλα με ἤμελξας ἐτύρωσας δέ με ἴσα τυρῷ

11 δέρμα καὶ κρέας με ἐνέδυσας ὀστέοις δὲ καὶ νεύροις με ἐνεῖρας

12 ζωὴν δὲ καὶ ἔλεος ἔθου παρ᾽ ἐμοί ἡ δὲ ἐπισκοπή σου ἐφύλαξέν μου τὸ πνεῦμα

13 ταῦτα ἔχων ἐν σεαυτῷ οἶδα ὅτι πάντα δύνασαι ἀδυνατεῖ δέ σοι οὐθέν

14 ἐάν τε γὰρ ἁμάρτω φυλάσσεις με ἀπὸ δὲ ἀνομίας οὐκ ἀθῷόν με πεποίηκας

15 ἐάν τε γὰρ ἀσεβὴς ὦ οἴμμοι ἐάν τε ὦ δίκαιος οὐ δύναμαι ἀνακύψαι πλήρης γὰρ ἀτιμίας εἰμί

16 ἀγρεύομαι γὰρ ὥσπερ λέων εἰς σφαγήν πάλιν δὲ μεταβαλὼν δεινῶς με ὀλέκεις

17 ἐπανακαινίζων ἐπ᾽ ἐμὲ τὴν ἔτασίν μου ὀργῇ δὲ μεγάλῃ μοι ἐχρήσω ἐπήγαγες δὲ ἐπ᾽ ἐμὲ πειρατήρια

18 ἵνα τί οὖν ἐκ κοιλίας με ἐξήγαγες καὶ οὐκ ἀπέθανον ὀφθαλμὸς δέ με οὐκ εἶδεν

19 καὶ ὥσπερ οὐκ ὢν ἐγενόμην διὰ τί γὰρ ἐκ γαστρὸς εἰς μνῆμα οὐκ ἀπηλλάγην

20 ἦ οὐκ ὀλίγος ἐστὶν ὁ χρόνος τοῦ βίου μου ἔασόν με ἀναπαύσασθαι μικρὸν

21 πρὸ τοῦ με πορευθῆναι ὅθεν οὐκ ἀναστρέψω εἰς γῆν σκοτεινὴν καὶ γνοφεράν

22 εἰς γῆν σκότους αἰωνίου οὗ οὐκ ἔστιν φέγγος οὐδὲ ὁρᾶν ζωὴν βροτῶν

‎1 ‏נָֽקְטָ֥ה נַפְשִׁ֗י בְּחַ֫יָּ֥י אֶֽעֶזְבָ֣ה עָלַ֣י שִׂיחִ֑י אֲ֝דַבְּרָה֗ בְּמַ֣ר נַפְשִֽׁי׃

‎2 ‏אֹמַ֣ר אֶל־אֱ֭לוֹהַּ אַל־תַּרְשִׁיעֵ֑נִי הֽ֝וֹדִיעֵ֗נִי עַ֣ל מַה־תְּרִיבֵֽנִי׃

‎3 ‏הֲט֤וֹב לְךָ֨׀³ כִּֽי־תַעֲשֹׁ֗ק כִּֽי־תִ֭מְאַס יְגִ֣יעַ כַּפֶּ֑יךָ וְעַל־עֲצַ֖ת רְשָׁעִ֣ים הוֹפָֽעְתָּ׃

‎4 ‏הַעֵינֵ֣י בָשָׂ֣ר לָ֑ךְ אִם־כִּרְא֖וֹת אֱנ֣וֹשׁ תִּרְאֶֽה׃

‎5 ‏הֲכִימֵ֣י אֱנ֣וֹשׁ יָמֶ֑יךָ אִם־שְׁ֝נוֹתֶ֗יךָ כִּ֣ימֵי גָֽבֶר׃

‎6 ‏כִּֽי־תְבַקֵּ֥שׁ לַעֲוֹנִ֑י וּ֭לְחַטָּאתִ֥י תִדְרֽוֹשׁ׃

‎7 ‏עַֽל־דַּ֭עְתְּךָ כִּי־לֹ֣א אֶרְשָׁ֑ע וְאֵ֖ין מִיָּדְךָ֣ מַצִּֽיל׃

‎8 ‏יָדֶ֣יךָ עִ֭צְּבוּנִי וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֑וּנִי יַ֥חַד סָ֝בִ֗יב וַֽתְּבַלְּעֵֽנִי׃

‎9 ‏זְכָר־נָ֭א כִּי־כַחֹ֣מֶר עֲשִׂיתָ֑נִי וְֽאֶל־עָפָ֥ר תְּשִׁיבֵֽנִי׃

‎10 ‏הֲלֹ֣א כֶ֭חָלָב תַּתִּיכֵ֑נִי וְ֝כַגְּבִנָּ֗ה תַּקְפִּיאֵֽנִי׃

‎11 ‏ע֣וֹר וּ֭בָשָׂר תַּלְבִּישֵׁ֑נִי וּֽבַעֲצָמ֥וֹת וְ֝גִידִ֗ים תְּסֹכְכֵֽנִי׃

‎12 ‏חַיִּ֣ים וָ֭חֶסֶד עָשִׂ֣יתָ עִמָּדִ֑י וּ֝פְקֻדָּתְךָ֗ שָֽׁמְרָ֥ה רוּחִֽי׃

‎13 ‏וְ֭אֵלֶּה צָפַ֣נְתָּ בִלְבָבֶ֑ךָ יָ֝דַ֗עְתִּי כִּי־זֹ֥את עִמָּֽךְ׃

‎14 ‏אִם־חָטָ֥אתִי וּשְׁמַרְתָּ֑נִי וּ֝מֵעֲוֹנִ֗י לֹ֣א תְנַקֵּֽנִי׃

‎15 ‏אִם־רָשַׁ֡עְתִּי אַלְלַ֬י לִ֗י וְ֭צָדַקְתִּי לֹא־אֶשָּׂ֣א רֹאשִׁ֑י שְׂבַ֥ע קָ֝ל֗וֹן וּרְאֵ֥ה עָנְיִֽי׃

‎16 ‏וְ֭יִגְאֶה כַּשַּׁ֣חַל תְּצוּדֵ֑נִי וְ֝תָשֹׁ֗ב תִּתְפַּלָּא־בִֽי׃

‎17 ‏תְּחַדֵּ֬שׁ עֵדֶ֨יךָ׀ נֶגְדִּ֗י וְתֶ֣רֶב כַּֽ֭עַשְׂךָ עִמָּדִ֑י חֲלִיפ֖וֹת וְצָבָ֣א עִמִּֽי׃

‎18 ‏וְלָ֣מָּה מֵ֭רֶחֶם הֹצֵאתָ֑נִי אֶ֝גְוַ֗ע וְעַ֣יִן לֹא־תִרְאֵֽנִי׃

‎19 ‏כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹא־הָיִ֣יתִי אֶהְיֶ֑ה מִ֝בֶּ֗טֶן לַקֶּ֥בֶר אוּבָֽל׃

‎20 ‏הֲלֹא־מְעַ֣ט יָמַ֣י יחדל וַחֲדָ֑ל ישית וְשִׁ֥ית מִ֝מֶּ֗נִּי וְאַבְלִ֥יגָה מְּעָֽט׃

‎21 ‏בְּטֶ֣רֶם אֵ֭לֵךְ וְלֹ֣א אָשׁ֑וּב אֶל־אֶ֖רֶץ חֹ֣שֶׁךְ וְצַלְמָֽוֶת׃

‎22 ‏אֶ֤רֶץ עֵיפָ֨תָה׀ כְּמ֥וֹ אֹ֗פֶל צַ֭לְמָוֶת וְלֹ֥א סְדָרִ֗ים וַתֹּ֥פַע כְּמוֹ־אֹֽפֶל׃ פ

1 [Tædet animam meam vitæ meæ;
dimittam adversum me eloquium meum:
loquar in amaritudine animæ meæ.

2 Dicam Deo: Noli me condemnare;
indica mihi cur me ita judices.

3 Numquid bonum tibi videtur, si calumnieris me,
et opprimas me opus manuum tuarum,
et consilium impiorum adjuves?

4 Numquid oculi carnei tibi sunt?
aut sicut videt homo, et tu videbis?

5 Numquid sicut dies hominis dies tui,
et anni tui sicut humana sunt tempora,

6 ut quæras iniquitatem meam,
et peccatum meum scruteris,

7 et scias quia nihil impium fecerim,
cum sit nemo qui de manu tua possit eruere?

8 Manus tuæ fecerunt me,
et plasmaverunt me totum in circuitu:
et sic repente præcipitas me?

9 Memento, quæso, quod sicut lutum feceris me,
et in pulverem reduces me.

10 Nonne sicut lac mulsisti me,
et sicut caseum me coagulasti?

11 Pelle et carnibus vestisti me;
ossibus et nervis compegisti me.

12 Vitam et misericordiam tribuisti mihi,
et visitatio tua custodivit spiritum meum.

13 Licet hæc celes in corde tuo,
tamen scio quia universorum memineris.

14 Si peccavi, et ad horam pepercisti mihi,
cur ab iniquitate mea mundum me esse non pateris?

15 Et si impius fuero, væ mihi est;
et si justus, non levabo caput,
saturatus afflictione et miseria.

16 Et propter superbiam quasi leænam capies me,
reversusque mirabiliter me crucias.

17 Instauras testes tuos contra me,
et multiplicas iram tuam adversum me,
et pœnæ militant in me.

18 Quare de vulva eduxisti me?
qui utinam consumptus essem, ne oculus me videret.

19 Fuissem quasi non essem,
de utero translatus ad tumulum.

20 Numquid non paucitas dierum meorum finietur brevi?
dimitte ergo me, ut plangam paululum dolorem meum,

21 antequam vadam, et non revertar,
ad terram tenebrosam, et opertam mortis caligine:

22 terram miseriæ et tenebrarum,
ubi umbra mortis et nullus ordo,
