1  Now the Philistines⁶⁴³⁰ fought³⁸⁹⁸ against Israel;³⁴⁷⁸ and the men³⁷⁶ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ fled⁵¹²⁷ from before^{4480 6440} the Philistines,⁶⁴³⁰ and fell down⁵³⁰⁷ slain²⁴⁹¹ in mount²⁰²² Gilboa.¹⁵³³

2  And the Philistines⁶⁴³⁰ followed hard¹⁶⁹² after³¹⁰ Saul,⁷⁵⁸⁶ and after³¹⁰ his sons;¹¹²¹ and the Philistines⁶⁴³⁰ slew^{5221 853} Jonathan,³¹²⁹ and Abinadab,⁴¹ and Malchi-shua,⁴⁴⁴⁴ the sons¹¹²¹ of Saul.⁷⁵⁸⁶

3  And the battle⁴⁴²¹ went sore³⁵¹³ against⁵⁹²¹ Saul,⁷⁵⁸⁶ and the archers^{3384 7198} hit⁴⁶⁷² him, and he was wounded²³⁴² of⁴⁴⁸⁰ the archers.³³⁸⁴

4  Then said⁵⁵⁹ Saul⁷⁵⁸⁶ to⁴¹³ his armorbearer,^{5375 3627} Draw⁸⁰²⁵ thy sword,²⁷¹⁹ and thrust me through¹⁸⁵⁶ therewith; lest⁶⁴³⁵ these⁴²⁸ uncircumcised⁶¹⁸⁹ come⁹³⁵ and abuse⁵⁹⁵³ me. But his armorbearer^{5375 3627} would¹⁴ not;³⁸⁰⁸ for³⁵⁸⁸ he was sore afraid.^{3372 3966} So Saul⁷⁵⁸⁶ took^{3947 853} a sword,²⁷¹⁹ and fell⁵³⁰⁷ upon⁵⁹²¹ it.

5  And when his armorbearer^{5375 3627} saw⁷²⁰⁰ that³⁵⁸⁸ Saul⁷⁵⁸⁶ was dead,⁴¹⁹¹ he¹⁹³¹ fell⁵³⁰⁷ likewise¹⁵⁷¹ on⁵⁹²¹ the sword,²⁷¹⁹ and died.⁴¹⁹¹

6  So Saul⁷⁵⁸⁶ died,⁴¹⁹¹ and his three⁷⁹⁶⁹ sons,¹¹²¹ and all³⁶⁰⁵ his house¹⁰⁰⁴ died⁴¹⁹¹ together.³¹⁶²

7  And when all³⁶⁰⁵ the men³⁷⁶ of Israel³⁴⁷⁸ that⁸³⁴ were in the valley⁶⁰¹⁰ saw⁷²⁰⁰ that³⁵⁸⁸ they fled,⁵¹²⁷ and that³⁵⁸⁸ Saul⁷⁵⁸⁶ and his sons¹¹²¹ were dead,⁴¹⁹¹ then they forsook⁵⁸⁰⁰ their cities,⁵⁸⁹² and fled:⁵¹²⁷ and the Philistines⁶⁴³⁰ came⁹³⁵ and dwelt³⁴²⁷ in them.

8  And it came to pass¹⁹⁶¹ on⁴⁴⁸⁰ the morrow,⁴²⁸³ when the Philistines⁶⁴³⁰ came⁹³⁵ to strip^{6584 853} the slain,²⁴⁹¹ that they found^{4672 853} Saul⁷⁵⁸⁶ and his sons¹¹²¹ fallen⁵³⁰⁷ in mount²⁰²² Gilboa.¹⁵³³

9  And when they had stripped⁶⁵⁸⁴ him, they took^{5375 853} his head,⁷²¹⁸ and his armor,³⁶²⁷ and sent⁷⁹⁷¹ into the land⁷⁷⁶ of the Philistines⁶⁴³⁰ round about,⁵⁴³⁹ to carry tidings^{1319 853} unto their idols,⁶⁰⁹¹ and to the people.⁵⁹⁷¹

10  And they put^{7760 853} his armor³⁶²⁷ in the house¹⁰⁰⁴ of their gods,⁴³⁰ and fastened⁸⁶²⁸ his head¹⁵³⁸ in the temple¹⁰⁰⁴ of Dagon.¹⁷¹²

11  And when all³⁶⁰⁵ Jabesh-gilead^{3003 1568} heard^{8085 853} all³⁶⁰⁵ that⁸³⁴ the Philistines⁶⁴³⁰ had done⁶²¹³ to Saul,⁷⁵⁸⁶

12  They arose,⁶⁹⁶⁵ all³⁶⁰⁵ the valiant²⁴²⁸ men,³⁷⁶ and took away^{5375 853} the body¹⁴⁸⁰ of Saul,⁷⁵⁸⁶ and the bodies¹⁴⁸⁰ of his sons,¹¹²¹ and brought⁹³⁵ them to Jabesh,³⁰⁰³ and buried^{6912 853} their bones⁶¹⁰⁶ under⁸⁴⁷⁸ the oak⁴²⁴ in Jabesh,³⁰⁰³ and fasted⁶⁶⁸⁴ seven⁷⁶⁵¹ days.³¹¹⁷

13  So Saul⁷⁵⁸⁶ died⁴¹⁹¹ for his transgression⁴⁶⁰⁴ which⁸³⁴ he committed⁴⁶⁰³ against the LORD,³⁰⁶⁸ even against⁵⁹²¹ the word¹⁶⁹⁷ of the LORD,³⁰⁶⁸ which⁸³⁴ he kept⁸¹⁰⁴ not,³⁸⁰⁸ and also¹⁵⁷¹ for asking⁷⁵⁹² counsel of one that had a familiar spirit,¹⁷⁸ to inquire¹⁸⁷⁵ of it;

14  And inquired¹⁸⁷⁵ not³⁸⁰⁸ of the LORD:³⁰⁶⁸ therefore he slew⁴¹⁹¹ him, and turned^{5437 853} the kingdom⁴⁴¹⁰ unto David¹⁷³² the son¹¹²¹ of Jesse.³⁴⁴⁸

1 καὶ ἀλλόφυλοι ἐπολέμησαν πρὸς Ισραηλ καὶ ἔφυγον ἀπὸ προσώπου ἀλλοφύλων καὶ ἔπεσον τραυματίαι ἐν ὄρει Γελβουε

2 καὶ κατεδίωξαν ἀλλόφυλοι ὀπίσω Σαουλ καὶ ὀπίσω υἱῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπάταξαν ἀλλόφυλοι τὸν Ιωναθαν καὶ τὸν Αμιναδαβ καὶ τὸν Μελχισουε υἱοὺς Σαουλ

3 καὶ ἐβαρύνθη ὁ πόλεμος ἐπὶ Σαουλ καὶ εὗρον αὐτὸν οἱ τοξόται ἐν τοῖς τόξοις καὶ πόνοις καὶ ἐπόνεσεν ἀπὸ τῶν τόξων

4 καὶ εἶπεν Σαουλ τῷ αἴροντι τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ σπάσαι τὴν ῥομφαίαν σου καὶ ἐκκέντησόν με ἐν αὐτῇ μὴ ἔλθωσιν οἱ ἀπερίτμητοι οὗτοι καὶ ἐμπαίξωσίν μοι καὶ οὐκ ἐβούλετο ὁ αἴρων τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἐφοβεῖτο σφόδρα καὶ ἔλαβεν Σαουλ τὴν ῥομφαίαν καὶ ἐπέπεσεν ἐπ᾽ αὐτήν

5 καὶ εἶδεν ὁ αἴρων τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἀπέθανεν Σαουλ καὶ ἔπεσεν καί γε αὐτὸς ἐπὶ τὴν ῥομφαίαν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπέθανεν

6 καὶ ἀπέθανεν Σαουλ καὶ τρεῖς υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ καὶ πᾶς ὁ οἶκος αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ ἀπέθανεν

7 καὶ εἶδεν πᾶς ἀνὴρ Ισραηλ ὁ ἐν τῷ αὐλῶνι ὅτι ἔφυγεν Ισραηλ καὶ ὅτι ἀπέθανεν Σαουλ καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ κατέλιπον τὰς πόλεις αὐτῶν καὶ ἔφυγον καὶ ἦλθον ἀλλόφυλοι καὶ κατῴκησαν ἐν αὐταῖς

8 καὶ ἐγένετο τῇ ἐχομένῃ καὶ ἦλθον ἀλλόφυλοι τοῦ σκυλεύειν τοὺς τραυματίας καὶ εὗρον τὸν Σαουλ καὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ πεπτωκότας ἐν τῷ ὄρει Γελβουε

9 καὶ ἐξέδυσαν αὐτὸν καὶ ἔλαβον τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπέστειλαν εἰς γῆν ἀλλοφύλων κύκλῳ τοῦ εὐαγγελίσασθαι τοῖς εἰδώλοις αὐτῶν καὶ τῷ λαῷ

10 καὶ ἔθηκαν τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ ἐν οἴκῳ θεοῦ αὐτῶν καὶ τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ ἔθηκαν ἐν οἴκῳ Δαγων

11 καὶ ἤκουσαν πάντες οἱ κατοικοῦντες Γαλααδ ἅπαντα ἃ ἐποίησαν ἀλλόφυλοι τῷ Σαουλ καὶ τῷ Ισραηλ

12 καὶ ἠγέρθησαν ἐκ Γαλααδ πᾶς ἀνὴρ δυνατὸς καὶ ἔλαβον τὸ σῶμα Σαουλ καὶ τὸ σῶμα τῶν υἱῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἤνεγκαν αὐτὰ εἰς Ιαβις καὶ ἔθαψαν τὰ ὀστᾶ αὐτῶν ὑπὸ τὴν δρῦν ἐν Ιαβις καὶ ἐνήστευσαν ἑπτὰ ἡμέρας

13 καὶ ἀπέθανεν Σαουλ ἐν ταῖς ἀνομίαις αὐτοῦ αἷς ἠνόμησεν τῷ κυρίῳ κατὰ τὸν λόγον κυρίου διότι οὐκ ἐφύλαξεν ὅτι ἐπηρώτησεν Σαουλ ἐν τῷ ἐγγαστριμύθῳ τοῦ ζητῆσαι καὶ ἀπεκρίνατο αὐτῷ Σαμουηλ ὁ προφήτης

14 καὶ οὐκ ἐζήτησεν κύριον καὶ ἀπέκτεινεν αὐτὸν καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν τὴν βασιλείαν τῷ Δαυιδ υἱῷ Ιεσσαι

‎1 ‏וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים נִלְחֲמ֣וּ בְיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיָּ֑נָס אִֽישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ מִפְּנֵ֣י פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וַיִּפְּל֥וּ חֲלָלִ֖ים בְּהַ֥ר גִּלְבֹּֽעַ׃

‎2 ‏וַיַּדְבְּק֣וּ פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים אַחֲרֵ֥י שָׁא֖וּל וְאַחֲרֵ֣י בָנָ֑יו וַיַּכּ֣וּ פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים אֶת־יוֹנָתָ֧ן וְאֶת־אֲבִינָדָ֛ב וְאֶת־מַלְכִּי־שׁ֖וּעַ בְּנֵ֥י שָׁאֽוּל׃

‎3 ‏וַתִּכְבַּ֤ד הַמִּלְחָמָה֙ עַל־שָׁא֔וּל וַיִּמְצָאֻ֖הוּ הַמּוֹרִ֣ים בַּקָּ֑שֶׁת וַיָּ֖חֶל מִן־הַיּוֹרִֽים׃

‎4 ‏וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שָׁאוּל֩ אֶל־נֹשֵׂ֨א כֵלָ֜יו שְׁלֹ֥ף חַרְבְּךָ֣׀ וְדָקְרֵ֣נִי בָ֗הּ פֶּן־יָבֹ֜אוּ הָעֲרֵלִ֤ים הָאֵ֙לֶּה֙ וְהִתְעַלְּלוּ־בִ֔י וְלֹ֤א אָבָה֙ נֹשֵׂ֣א כֵלָ֔יו כִּ֥י יָרֵ֖א מְאֹ֑ד סוַיִּקַּ֤ח שָׁאוּל֙ אֶת־הַחֶ֔רֶב וַיִּפֹּ֖ל עָלֶֽיהָ׃

‎5 ‏וַיַּ֥רְא נֹשֵֽׂא־כֵלָ֖יו כִּ֣י מֵ֣ת שָׁא֑וּל וַיִּפֹּ֥ל גַּם־ה֛וּא עַל־הַחֶ֖רֶב וַיָּמֹֽת׃ ס

‎6 ‏וַיָּ֤מָת שָׁאוּל֙ וּשְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת בָּנָ֔יו וְכָל־בֵּית֖וֹ יַחְדָּ֥ו מֵֽתוּ׃

‎7 ‏וַ֠יִּרְאוּ כָּל־אִ֨ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל אֲשֶׁר־בָּעֵ֙מֶק֙ כִּ֣י נָ֔סוּ וְכִי־מֵ֖תוּ שָׁא֣וּל וּבָנָ֑יו וַיַּעַזְב֤וּ עָרֵיהֶם֙ וַיָּנֻ֔סוּ וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וַיֵּשְׁב֖וּ בָּהֶֽם׃ ס

‎8 ‏וַיְהִי֙ מִֽמָּחֳרָ֔ת וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים לְפַשֵּׁ֖ט אֶת־הַֽחֲלָלִ֑ים וַֽיִּמְצְא֤וּ אֶת־שָׁאוּל֙ וְאֶת־בָּנָ֔יו נֹפְלִ֖ים בְּהַ֥ר גִּלְבֹּֽעַ׃

‎9 ‏וַיַּ֨פְשִׁיטֻ֔הוּ וַיִּשְׂא֥וּ אֶת־רֹאשׁ֖וֹ וְאֶת־כֵּלָ֑יו וַיְשַׁלְּח֨וּ בְאֶֽרֶץ־פְלִשְׁתִּ֜ים¹ סָבִ֗יב לְבַשֵּׂ֛ר אֶת־עֲצַבֵּיהֶ֖ם וְאֶת־הָעָֽם׃

‎10 ‏וַיָּשִׂ֙ימוּ֙ אֶת־כֵּלָ֔יו בֵּ֖ית אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֑ם וְאֶת־גֻּלְגָּלְתּ֥וֹ תָקְע֖וּ בֵּ֥ית דָּגֽוֹן׃ ס

‎11 ‏וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֔וּ כֹּ֖ל יָבֵ֣ישׁ גִּלְעָ֑ד אֵ֛ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁר־עָשׂ֥וּ פְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים לְשָׁאֽוּל׃

‎12 ‏וַיָּקוּמוּ֮ כָּל־אִ֣ישׁ חַיִל֒ וַיִּשְׂא֞וּ אֶת־גּוּפַ֣ת שָׁא֗וּל וְאֵת֙ גּוּפֹ֣ת בָּנָ֔יו וַיְבִיא֖וּם יָבֵ֑ישָׁה וַיִּקְבְּר֨וּ אֶת־עַצְמוֹתֵיהֶ֜ם תַּ֤חַת הָאֵלָה֙ בְּיָבֵ֔שׁ וַיָּצ֖וּמוּ שִׁבְעַ֥ת יָמִֽים׃

‎13 ‏וַיָּ֣מָת שָׁא֗וּל בְּמַֽעֲלוֹ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר מָעַ֣ל בַּֽיהוָ֔ה עַל־דְּבַ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹא־שָׁמָ֑ר וְגַם־לִשְׁא֥וֹל בָּא֖וֹב לִדְרֽוֹשׁ׃

‎14 ‏וְלֹֽא־דָרַ֥שׁ בַּֽיהוָ֖ה וַיְמִיתֵ֑הוּ וַיַּסֵּב֙ אֶת־הַמְּלוּכָ֔ה לְדָוִ֖יד בֶּן־יִשָֽׁי׃ פ

Vul

1 Philisthiim autem pugnabant contra Israël, fugeruntque viri Israël Palæsthinos, et ceciderunt vulnerati in monte Gelboë.

2 Cumque appropinquassent Philisthæi, persequentes Saul et filios ejus, percusserunt Jonathan, et Abinadab, et Melchisua filios Saul.

3 Et aggravatum est prælium contra Saul, inveneruntque eum sagittarii, et vulneraverunt jaculis.

4 Et dixit Saul ad armigerum suum: Evagina gladium tuum, et interfice me, ne forte veniant incircumcisi isti, et illudant mihi. Noluit autem armiger ejus hoc facere, timore perterritus: arripuit ergo Saul ensem, et irruit in eum.

5 Quod cum vidisset armiger ejus, videlicet mortuum esse Saul, irruit etiam ipse in gladium suum, et mortuus est.

6 Interiit ergo Saul: et tres filii ejus, et omnis domus illius pariter concidit.

7 Quod cum vidissent viri Israël qui habitabant in campestribus, fugerunt: et Saul ac filiis ejus mortuis, dereliquerunt urbes suas, et huc illucque dispersi sunt: veneruntque Philisthiim, et habitaverunt in eis.

8 Die igitur altero detrahentes Philisthiim spolia cæsorum, invenerunt Saul et filios ejus jacentes in monte Gelboë.

9 Cumque spoliassent eum, et amputassent caput, armisque nudassent, miserunt in terram suam, ut circumferretur, et ostenderetur idolorum templis, et populis:

10 arma autem ejus consecraverunt in fano dei sui, et caput affixerunt in templo Dagon.

11 Hoc cum audissent viri Jabes Galaad, omnia scilicet quæ Philisthiim fecerant super Saul,

12 consurrexerunt singuli virorum fortium, et tulerunt cadavera Saul et filiorum ejus: attuleruntque ea in Jabes, et sepelierunt ossa eorum subter quercum, quæ erat in Jabes, et jejunaverunt septem diebus.

13 Mortuus est ergo Saul propter iniquitates suas, eo quod prævaricatus sit mandatum Domini quod præceperat, et non custodierit illud: sed insuper etiam pythonissam consuluerit,

14 nec speraverit in Domino: propter quod interfecit eum, et transtulit regnum ejus ad David filium Isai.
